Alice in Wonderland (1951) is a feature-length animated film produced by Walt Disney, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s beloved novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The film premiered simultaneously in New York City and London on July 26, 1951. Alice was voiced by Kathryn Beaumont, with Ed Wynn bringing the Mad Hatter to life in one of the film’s most memorable performances.

Walt Disney held a lifelong fondness for Carroll’s stories and had explored the world of Alice decades before the studio’s feature-era successes. In 1923, while working with the Laugh-O-Gram Studio, he helped produce the Alice’s Wonderland series, combining live-action performances by Virginia Davis with animated environments. The concept of adapting Alice in Wonderland into a full-length animated feature remained a long-standing ambition, though it was placed on hold until after the overwhelming success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Active production on the film ultimately began in 1945.

A key artistic influence on the final look of the film was Mary Blair, whose work as a color stylist and background designer shaped its distinctive visual identity. Her bold, vibrant, and deliberately “unrealistic” use of color helped capture the whimsical, musical, and dreamlike qualities of Carroll’s writing. Walt Disney initially considered returning to a live-action-and-animation hybrid format, echoing the Alice Comedies of the 1920s, but ultimately chose full animation to better preserve the fantastical spirit of the original stories.
